2022-2023 SCA Australasia Awards

On Wednesday 7th June, the 2022-2023 SCA Australasia Awards Gala Dinner was held. Hosted at the Darwin Convention Centre, the evening was a celebration of those who make a significant contribution to the strata industry and community across Australia and New Zealand. The winners from the 2022 SCA (Vic) Pillar Awards were finalists in the 2022-2023 SCA Australasia Awards. We would like to send our congratulations to all finalists and winners in this year’s awards.

The Knight were proud finalists in six categories this year:

  • Essay Award – Sim Firns
  • Support Team Member – Ella Sheldon
  • Strata Community Manager – Dianne Burton
  • Strata Community Environmental & Engagement Award – Alex Smale
  • Large Strata Community Management Business – The Knight
  • Excellence in Innovation Award – The Knight

It is with excitement to share that we came away as winners in two categories, Support Team Member and the Large Business award! We are so proud of the hard work and commitment shown by our team and look forward to continuing to push for a more professional, ethical and respected strata industry.

Essay Award – Sim Firns – Finalist

This award recognises an individual who displays a sound understanding of the topic and its relevance to the strata community industry.

Sim Firns submitted an essay titled “It’s all part of the service” exploring the effects of burnout and the importance of a supportive team culture within management firms. In her essay, Sim highlights the different ways in which we can support our peers, and how strata employees and businesses can take control of a sometimes uncontrollable role.

The Future of the Development Industry – Sustainability, Community & Profit

At The Knight we strive to be thought leaders within the Owners Corporation industry, constantly sharing and expanding upon our knowledge base. As part of this, we are constantly looking to the thought leaders around us for inspiration and guidance and December 3rd was an afternoon filled with such inspiration. Firstly, we attended the UDIA End of Year celebration in the Jinding Developments office in the Rialto Tower focused on the themes of Sustainability and Energy Efficiency. Projects which achieved an EnviroDevelopment verification were recognised and the increased push towards sustainability within the industry was observed. We then rounded out the evening by attending a free talk at the newly unveiled MPavillion, hosted by Small Giants Developments. What is an Owners Corporation?

Strata titled properties in Australia have assets (property, services) that no single private lot owner has individual responsibility and/or authority for. Examples include corridors, communal lighting, and a shared roof and so on. Within Victoria, Owners Corporations are legal entities created by the registration of Plans of Subdivision. The Plan of Subdivision will show which portions of the property are private and which are common. Why do Owners Corporations exist? Owners Corporations enable multiple people to own privately sub-titled property on the same piece of land, which also includes ownership of the land beneath ground level (e.g. a basement car park) and of the airspace above (e.g. when you own an apartment on the third flood, you really own the airspace at that height that is surrounded by walls, a floor and a ceiling).
